A recent incident in China has left many people scratching their heads, wondering what exactly happened. Apparently, a Chinese professor by the name of Chen Hongyou was suspended from his university after a student accused him of ‘worshipping the West’. But what does that even mean?

Do not cross-breed with Americans

Well, according to a video that has been making the rounds on social media, a student walked onto the stage during one of Chen Hongyou’s lectures and shouted, “He only has money in his eyes, thinks learning is just for money, worships the West and panders to overseas powers.” Wow, talk about a bold statement! But it didn’t stop there. The student went on to say, “For what purpose do we study hard? It’s for the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. Do not cross-breed with Americans!”

Whoa, hold up. Did we just go from talking about worshipping the West to not cross-breeding with Americans? This seems like quite the jump in logic, but I guess the student had a point to make. However, it’s not clear what exactly Chen Hongyou said that set the student off in the first place.

Chen Hongyou tried to defend himself, stating that his speech was intended to encourage students ‘to use their own efforts to change their destiny, and to step toward the wider country and the world’. He even claimed that he was joking about gender and nationalities in his talk. But the damage was already done, and he was suspended from his university.

It’s a shame that this incident had to happen, especially since education is supposed to be about learning and growth. But it goes to show that words can be powerful and have serious consequences. Who knew a simple lecture could spark such controversy? I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what happens next. Maybe the lesson here is to always think before you speak, especially if you’re a professor.
